Update

Theo is three months. We went for his monthly well visit the other day. His weight is catching up with his height! He is now 14 lbs 8 oz and 25 inches. 74th percentile. He is a big boy. She said he looks like he could be six months. This scares me for what is to come!

I met another pediatrician in the practice. She was really great. He had his 3 month shot – Prevnar (PCV). It’s for meningitis and also is supposed to lessen the occurrence of ear infections and pneumonia. He gave us a big cry and the doctor said that one stings a bit and can make them a bit fussy afterwards. He was a little bit on the fussy side that night. Seemed to want to be held more and didn’t eat as much as usual. I gave him infant tylenol for the first time to help him sleep and feel better, just in case.

Here are some new developments. He has fantastic head control. She said he is ready to be forward facing in the carrier if we want. He is becoming more “oral”, drooling a lot and putting his hand in his mouth. He smiles and coos a bunch and seems to giggle a bit, too (although she said they really start to giggle around 4 months). He loves peek-a-boo. He is really strong and likes to be held up in standing position. He really pushes back hard and uses his strong leg muscles! He is also starting to kind of grab at things with his hands.

I have been reading about sleep training and thinking about when/if we want to do this. I am feeling confused about it- or maybe just lazy? I read the No Cry, Sleep Solution and then his pediatrician said, “The Tribeca Pediatrics belief is to put the baby down sometime between 7:30-9:30pm and don’t pick him up again until 6am. Just let him cry it out (CIO)”. CIO is the opposite of what I have been reading. I don’t know, yet, what we will do. The idea is to teach them to self-soothe and put themselves to sleep and they will sleep through the night. Is this really what he needs? Does he not need middle-of-the-night feedings? Supposedly, no. Physiologically, he doesn’t. Is it more for me? Either way, he is a pretty good sleeper. Last night he slept 7 hours straight. That was a treat. Normally he is up once (usually around 3:30/4am) to eat. He takes great naps during the day. Either two or three naps depending on what time he got up in the AM. Today he had a 3 hour nap and a 1 1/2 hour nap. He is doing so great.
