Our very first wedding anniversary! Last year at this time we were newly married and walking our way across the Brooklyn Bridge. We are now a week and a half away from our wedding reception party where we get to renew our vows and celebrate with many of our friends and family. We created a website for our party and a section of it is dedicated to the proposal from “his” and “her” perspective. Since the website won’t be up for long, Jay suggested we put that section here on our blog so that we can have it forever. And so our kid(s) can see it down the road. So, here goes…
His story:
Every man wants to give his gal the perfect engagement. Me, I always thought I’d propose over the Jumbotron at MSG. Marci said she wouldn’t prefer that but I knew deep down inside she wanted it. Either way, Mike beat me to it with his Cavs stunner! So it was time for plan B. I wanted it to be special and something New York-centric so we would always remember our time here. A subway proposal it would be. One Saturday, I decided to lock it up on our way to Marci’s friend Mandie’s house party. That way she could brag to all her friends and it would be a great night. I couldn’t contain myself- I told everybody that day. The Arsenal bros heard as I walked out of the Black Horse. I cornered Lalena when she came over to babysit Theo and pulled out the ring when Marci was in the other room. I’m sure I told Liz at some point.
I was really nervous on that 2 train and completely froze up. I didn’t say a word to Marci on the train and I was sweatin bullets. I knew that if I didn’t pick a time to do it, I would certainly chicken out. So it was going to be under the East River. Bergen… Nevins… Hoyt… with each stop my pulse quickened as I approached the impending plunge. The train wasn’t packed, but all the seats were taken and there was an occasional straphanger standing close to us. Finally, as the doors closed at Clark St., I knew it was my time to nail this mutha. As the train reached full speed, I turned to Marci and said, “There is something I need to do.†I fumbled thru my front pocket for the ring. Marci said, “Is this happening right now?†Yes.
She said yes, the train clapped, I gave a couple nods of my head to the crowd, buried it in Marci’s shoulder, and the rest is history.
Her story:
Although we had been planning our secret nuptials at city hall, and had looked at rings together a couple times, I was still surprised when Jay got down on one knee on the 3 train as we traveled from Brooklyn to Manhattan one evening last June. Our wedding day was only a few days away, so I guess I knew the ring was coming. I hoped it was coming! I never would have guessed he would have proposed on the subway. Jay doesn’t like bringing attention to himself, at least amongst strangers. Looking back, he was acting a bit nervous on the train. Our conversation a little strange and he was fidgety. As we headed under the East River, he reached in his pocket, got down on one knee, popped out a gorgeous ring I had drooled over and asked me to marry him. It was so quick and yet felt like slow motion. My face immediately went in my hands as I was surprised, happy and knew everyone was staring at us! I said yes (was he uncertain?!) and the whole train began to clap. It was very sweet and romantic in a very city slicker kinda way and I wouldn’t change a thing.
