It’s hard to believe that a little less than 3 weeks ago I gave birth to this little guy. The whole labor and delivery experience is beginning to blur. It seems like he has been here longer. I think back now to the months and months of pregnancy and I really do appreciate how easy it was and how much time I had to relax and do whatever I wanted to do. All of those nights of watching Arrested Development on my computer, feeling so bored because Jay was working nights, and strolling around the neighborhood in search of ice cream 😉 Those days are definitely over. Despite the challenges that we have already faced… and the difficulties of newborn world… I love Theo so much and really fall more in love with him each day. He is such a sweetie and it makes me so happy to just look over and see his face. We created this little person and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am so lucky to have Jay and our new family. I hope we are the best parents we can be to him.
Theo is a sports fan.
Like daddy, Theo loves his sports. He’s already cheered on the Browns to an 0-2 start and can’t wait for the NHL to begin. Theo also caught his first Arsenal match last Saturday with his buddy Sam Palmer. An unfortunate late goal by Sunderland’s Darren Bent spoiled his day. Grandpa Joe was visiting recently and wants to see him play mighty mite hockey next fall. It might be a bit soon to put weights on his ankles, but we like the enthusiasm over here. Many of you have asked ‘What teams does Theo support?’ He asked me to pass on a list of clubs he would be honored to rep, as Christmas is just around the corner:

Meeting more family and friends…
Theo is already so lucky to have so many friends and family around who want to meet him and love him! He got to meet our very good friend, Sarah…
All of the Dad’s came to Brooklyn to meet Theo and to be a part of his briss (circumcision). It was a really nice ceremony and he received his Jewish name. It was really tough for me, though, and I had to hide in the bedroom. Luckily, Jay was strong and could be there to help Theo with this rite of passage. He is doing really well!
Papa Hanky (Jay’s stepdad)
Grandpa Joe (Jay’s dad)
And my Dad, too!
Theo also went for his first voting experience this week! He helped Mama choose her candidates for the primary election
And here are some cuties I just couldn’t resist
All of our family visitors are gone for the time being until my sister and Mom come in October. Many friends of ours will probably start coming by to meet him soon.
First weekend at home
Yia Yia Liz came to stay with us and meet baby Theo
Theo also got to meet Cori and Scott and his little cousins Sam and Will!
Theo swingin’
We’ve already learned that Theo is very thoughtful…
The first few days have been really great. So much help from Yia Yia Liz and just getting to know this little person. He seems pretty mellow so far. Likes to eat and sleep like most babies. Last night we even went for a 5 hr stretch of sleep! He feeds mostly, though, about every 90 minutes or 2 hours, for now anyways. He visited the pediatrician and she said he is very healthy and strong! He passed his hearing test, too. We are back at the doc tomorrow for another check-in.
Theo’s Birth Story
And first yawn!

Before too many days pass, and the details become blurry, here is Theo’s birth story…
My water broke around 1:30pm on Monday, September 6th. So, I called the birth center to talk to the midwife on call. Andrea called me back and because I hadn’t had any contractions yet she told me to wait a bit and see if anything happened. She asked us to meet her at the birth center at 7pm. That would give us some time to see if contractions would start on their own. We needed to be checked to make sure in fact that my water did break and the midwife could tell us what the next steps would be.
I felt nothing. We saw Andrea at the birth center at 7pm that evening. She checked to confirm that my water broke… and it had. Everything was looking good. His heartbeat was fine, my blood pressure, etc. She gave us the lowdown of what my water breaking meant, without having started any contractions. About 80% of women go into labor naturally after their water breaks. However, if I didn’t within 24 hours, I would have to be induced. This was not good news to me because it would mean being in the hospital (not to mention being induced). So, the plan was to take castor oil (yuck!) at 9am if I hadn’t felt any contractions yet. I was not pleased about this option. Castor oil is known for getting labor started, though, so that was the last resort plan. Jay and I went home and figured we would just relax and watch a movie. Honestly, I started to feel a bit nervous because I didn’t want the hospital induction. Either way, the good news was that one way or another baby was coming and would be with us very soon.
I was on the couch relaxing and I felt a unique pain around 10:30pm. I knew right away it was a contraction because it came in a wave and did not feel good! I told Jay and he started to document the times and how long they lasted. They were coming every five minutes like clockwork, right from the start. We waited until this was consistent for one hour and called the midwife. She told us to get in a cab and meet her at the birthing center. We talked to our doula, who happened to be our neighborhood. She met us outside our apartment after midnight and Jay got us a car service. By now, the contractions were definitely getting more intense and closer together. Riding in the cab was not pleasant and it took adjusting to how I could sit, cope with the contractions, etc. Luckily the driver was quick and we got there pretty fast. He caught on to what was going on in the backseat and drove accordingly.
When we got to the birthing center, things picked up even more. Contractions were coming one right after another and we headed straight to the birthing room. Once Andrea checked me, she found that I was already 10cm dilated and I definitely felt ready to push! It was such an intense whirlwind. The birthing assistant wasn’t even there yet. It was just our midwife, the doula, me and Jay. And so I began pushing. The birthing assistant showed up at the tail end. She was a woman I know and it was so great to have her there for the birth. Next thing I knew, Theo was laying on my chest and the worst was over. He was so warm! It was amazing. He was born at 1:45am. Only 3 hours 15 minutes after my first contraction. I got to hang out with him on my chest for quite some time. Jay cut the cord and we all just spent some time bonding. Everyone was healthy. A little later, he was cleaned up and checked out. Theo weighed in at 7lbs and was 20.5 inches. Daddy got to put on his first diaper and outfit!
All in all, it could not have been a more perfect experience. We had our natural birth at the birthing center and it was just us. We got to sleep in the bed with our new baby and get some rest. Come morning we were checked again for vital signs and cleared to go home. After paperwork and eating and relaxing a bit as a new family, we hit the road back home. We were safe and sound back home by noon.
Theo is a little sweetie and we are continuing to get to know each other. Stay tuned for many more pics to come! XOXO
Theo is here!
He finally made it! Theo decided to join us on September 7th at 1:45am. It was truly an amazing experience and we are home, healthy, and happy. Here are some pictures from his first hours with us…

Home Sweet Home (Theo took a ride in his first taxi! Slept the whole way… thank goodness)

More than 40 weeks…
Surprise! It’s still just me. I’m sure those who are checking on here would like to start seeing some posts of Theo… believe me, I would too! He still hasn’t arrived. I guess he’s not quite ready to make his debut into the world. He will come when he’s ready. In the meantime, I will document my belly as it continues to grow and provide some more pregnancy updates. Yay!
We were back at the birthing center on Wednesday (our due date) for our check-up. The good news is that the baby is dropping and the midwife said he is perfectly positioned and engaged in the pelvis. These are good signs that he is getting ready. His heartbeat was great and everything continues to look normal. They don’t start doing any tests, or even an internal exam, until 41 weeks. She swears that most women have the baby closer to 41 weeks and that there is no point in doing extra exams or this or that because she trusts that the baby will come when he is ready. Even if she would have checked and found me to be 4cm dilated, it still wouldn’t mean I would have the baby any sooner than 41 weeks. Same goes for finding no dilation… I could still go into labor tomorrow and it wouldn’t make a difference. So, we wait.
I have a sonogram appt for next Wed at 41 weeks. This is where they check to make sure the amniotic fluid level is still okay and they look closely at the heartbeat and other movements of the baby. Then I am back at the birthing center to perhaps talk about some ways to get things started naturally. I am also considering going for acupuncture on Tuesday if I haven’t had the baby by then.
Mostly I just do not want to get to 42 weeks and I do not want to be induced. So, I will wait until 41 weeks and then see what they say. Like the midwife says though… typically these natural ways to induce labor don’t even matter because the baby will come when he comes. And she trusts that it will be within the week. We are ready!
Jay and I have finally been here at the apartment together all week. It has been so nice. We have been finishing up last minute baby things… thank you cards, packing our “go” bag, reviewing our birth preferences, cleaning up clutter (sort of!), and just relaxing together – watching movies and napping!
It has been way too hot. I think the weather is finally breaking tonight and the weekend and next week will be down in the 70’s. Thank you. Perfect weather to bring home a baby. 🙂
